Huntsville wins its own social media conference

Our northern neighbor has made a profitable splash on social media.

Huntsville won a Facebook contest on Tuesday to hold the 2013 Social Media Tourism Symposium in November. The Huntsville/Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau led the voting effort on Facebook and Twitter, beating out Missoula, Mont.

Vancouver agency Think! Social Media held the annual U.S. conference in El Paso, Texas, in 2012; Tunica, Miss., in 2011; and Loudoun County, Va., in 2010.

Organizers in Huntsville canvassed votes through hashtags, QR codes and street teams armed with iPads.

The bureau celebrated earlier today with a public party.

Some 300 attendees are expected at the 3-day conference, with a projected $180,000 impact on the city’s economy, as calculated by the visitors bureau.

Speaker lineup and schedule have not yet been announced.

(A gentle suggestion to the Huntsville convention and visitors bureau: Include a link to your Twitter account @Go2HuntsvilleAL on your Web site.)
